The Building Bridges Project 2016: Duwa La Mawa

Students with Dreams project Duwa la Mawa was shortlisted for Building Bridges: Road to Nairobi 2016.  From Johannesburg to rural communities around Africa, the Road to Nairobi bus is connecting young entrepreneurs and changemakers in eight African countries to foster youth employment.

Dreamers Norah Mwase and Thelma Kaliu were young entrepreneurs who made jewellery and crafts to boost their income in a struggling economy. They created Duwa La Mawa to help young women in Zomba go back to school. Dropout rates are higher among adolescent girls than boys, often following early pregnancy and marriage. To increase access to education, Duwa La Mawa strives to teach marginalised girls financial and handcrafting skills to help raise school fees.
