The Art and Global Health Center Africa is delighted to announce that Her Majesty the Queen presented Madalo Banda – a Dreamer and Mentor in our Students with Dreams programme –with a Queen’s Young Leaders (QYL) Award at Buckingham Palace in London.
Students with Dreams provides college students with training, mentorship and seed funding to develop innovative projects that address pressing social issues. Dreamers Madalo and Lekodi Magombo collaborated to create Loud Ink, a project providing secondary school students with a platform to confront injustice through creative writing. They organized readings and discussions exploring the power of literature and ran workshops empowering students to tackle the issues that mattered to them – from living with HIV/AIDS to surviving abuse – in writing.
Banda received the QYL Award along with 58 other young leaders from Commonwealth countries. This year’s Award winners are working to support others, raise awareness and inspire change on a variety of issues, including education, climate change, gender, mental health and improving the lives of people with disabilities.
